Enter through the Siq
A 1.2km walk through a narrow sandstone gorge with walls up to 80m high. Along the way, look for carved niches, terracotta pipes, and Nabataean water channels (included with every ticket).
The Treasury reveal
The Siq opens onto Al-Khazneh (the Treasury), Petra's signature facade. It stands 40m high and 25m wide, with Corinthian columns and a plaza where most visitors stop for photos.
Follow Petra’s main city
Past the Treasury, the trail widens into the Street of Facades, the 4,000-seat theater, and the road toward the Great Temple and Qasr al-Bint. Guided tours add historical commentary here.
Climb to the Monastery
Booked 2 or 3 days? Head for Ad-Deir (the Monastery). The climb takes 45 to 90 minutes over 800+ steps, ending at a 50m-wide facade with views across Wadi Araba.
Loop back through the canyon
Most visits end by retracing the main trail past the theater and facades. Expect 4 to 6 hours onsite for the core route, or about 3 hours on a guided walkthrough.
Add Petra by Night
A separate ticketed evening event: the Siq-to-Treasury walk again, this time beside 1,500+ candles with Bedouin music and storytelling. Longer combo tours may add Wadi Rum or the Dead Sea (included where noted).

Booking window: Entry-only tickets work for last-minute plans. Book Amman transfers and multi-day tours further ahead, especially in spring and autumn when day-trip demand is higher.
What’s included: Base tickets cover the archaeological park for 1, 2, or 3 consecutive days. They don't include Petra by Night, licensed guiding, Gulf-car shuttles, or animal rides.
Entrances & flow: Everyone enters through the Petra Visitor Center. Pre-booked e-tickets skip the ticket booth, not security, so bag checks still apply and morning entry waves can add 15 to 30 minutes.
Ways to explore: Choose self-guided entry for flexibility. Choose a guided Amman day trip if you want transport and site context in one booking. If the Monastery is on your list, book the 2-day entry ticket rather than a single day.
Choose the right ticket: Petra prices tickets differently depending on where you're sleeping that night, not just how many days you want:
Overnight visitor rate (lower): If you're staying at a hotel in Jordan, you qualify for the discounted rate. You'll need to show proof of your Jordan hotel booking at the ticket counter or when booking online.
Day visitor rate (higher): If you're crossing into Jordan for the day and not staying overnight, you pay the day-visitor rate for 1-day entry. Multi-day tickets aren't available at this rate, since they assume you're staying in the country.
If you're not sure which applies to you: book the overnight rate if you have any Jordan hotel booking, even for one night. If you're doing a same-day round trip across the border, budget for the higher day-visitor ticket.
Policies & rules: 2-day and 3-day tickets are valid on consecutive days, not split across a trip. Jordan Pass holders still need to validate at the visitor center. The main approach to the Treasury is the most accessible stretch; paths beyond it get rougher.

It doesn't cover Petra by Night; that's always a separate, additional ticket regardless of how you entered during the day.
It's priced at the overnight-visitor rate, since it requires an overnight stay, so don't expect Jordan Pass to be cheaper than the JOD 90 day-visitor ticket if you're only in the country for a few hours.
